Welcome back to the greatest sport on the planet. The 2026-27 NHL season is almost here, and we're in for a very competitive year. The league decided to expand the season to 84 games (up from 82), which means opening night is even earlier this year (Sept. 29th). I'll do my best to predict this wide-open Eastern Conference. At first glance, there are 13-14 teams with a shot at the playoffs. Try to look at these predictions as power rankings rather than a set-in-stone position. Remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint.
ATLANTIC DIVISION
1) Buffalo Sabres (A1)
I recognize that it’s extremely hard to repeat as division champs in hockey, but remember this is more of a power ranking. In recent years, Buffalo never had an issue scoring, but they couldn't stop anything on defense. That all changed with the emergence of blue liners Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power. The new-look Sabres are a healthy mix of superstars in their prime and a young supporting cast that all fit perfectly in Buffalo's up-tempo playstyle. This is a very deep team with playoff experience and an unbreakable spirit. Spearheaded by franchise player turned head coach, Lindy Ruff, I think the Sabres' window is wide open and are in title contention once again. I trust strong systems above all else.
2) Montreal Canadiens (A2)
Caufield-Suzuki-Slafkovsky might be the best line in hockey. To put that in a points perspective, it’s 88-101-73, respectively. That’s pretty frickin’ good. They scored a combined 110 goals of the team’s 283 (39%); not to mention the production from other young stars like D Lane Huston and RW Ivan Demidov. While Montreal is a bit undersized, they’re speedy. They’ve gotten slightly better each year, and their goalie trio of Dobes, Montembeault, and Fowler is pretty underrated in my opinion. The Blue Line is their one weak spot, but I think they’ll be right back in the mix once again. What sets the Habs apart for me is their intangible “clutch gene,” which is hard to come by these days.
3) Tampa Bay Lightning (A3)
To keep up with the “strong systems” theme, you should never, ever count out Jon Cooper’s Lightning. While their top players are getting old without much young firepower to support them, Tampa Bay is still a well-oiled machine. They’ve made the playoffs 9 years in a row and averaged 283 goals per season in that time. It seems like they get more productive with age. Although they’ve recently become perennial first round exits, they’re almost always a playoff lock with this talent, system, coach, and front office. If they're bounced out early again this year, then I think their window will finally close as they shift their focus towards youth.
4) Florida Panthers (WC1)
To everyone’s enjoyment, the two-time reigning champs crashed and burned last season. It was entirely due to injuries, but I also think they were worn out. They’re an old and extremely physical team. That takes a toll on you eventually. However, I think they bounce back this season thanks to some young contributors, uniting the Tkachuk brothers, and a great head coach. Florida also has some impressive depth at the Center position, which has proved to be the recipe for a productive offense in modern hockey. Goaltending concerns me with Bobrovsky out of the picture, but if the prodigy Cooper Black plays up to his potential… then we’re in trouble.
5) Ottawa Senators (WC2)
I’ll be honest, this is a vibes pick. I hate to admit it, but I’m kind of impressed with this front office. They’re rewarding loyalty and commitment with massive contract extensions and removing the bad apples from the bunch. The capital they get is then immediately redeemed for younger, nicer, higher-ceiling players. That’s a good business model and one that’s very attractive for free agents. Acquiring LW Will Eklund from the Sharks solidifies 4 quality lines of wingers to distract from their relatively weak Center group. They’re not exactly a superteam, but I don’t expect a 99-point playoff team to regress after only improving this offseason.
6) Boston Bruins
The Bruins are being faded by a lot of experts. Why? Well, a lot of them believe that Boston can’t repeat last year’s success. What this really means is that they can’t repeat that same production. I disagree. They have lots of new, young forwards emerging and added RW JJ Peterka to boot. They will certainly repeat that offensive production. What I think will be their Achilles heel, however, is a collapsing defense and goaltending that can’t survive on its own. This is a really good team that’s in the shadow of great teams, but this conference is wide open. Perhaps higher production from young playmakers like C James Hagens and Frazer Minten will be the catalyst.
7) Toronto Maple Leafs
After winning the #1 pick thanks to.. erm.. “luck,” the Maple Leafs drafted the consensus top prospect, LW Gavin McKenna. Additionally, this is where they need the most help: along the wings. The Leafs completely rebuilt their defense and goaltending in one offseason, but the offense is still lacking production. Will Auston Matthews stay healthy? Is signing a bunch of veterans who are past their prime really the solution? Toronto may end up overperforming, but there are too many unknowns right now. They're on the outside looking in, and usually teams in this position are a year or two away from actually competing.
8) Detroit Red Wings
What. A. Mess. The Red Wings are in a truly awful, self-inflicted situation. They haven’t been to the playoffs in a decade, their Captain requested a trade (and failed to find any takers), and the front office recently underwent some significant overhaul. Probably for the best, yet it means nothing if only the people change and the ideas remain the same. They have a few guys that can score, but the defense is patchy and goaltending has been an issue for many years. Ownership wants to make a playoff push, but they simply don't have the pieces or money to field a playoff team. They need to sell while value is high and do so quickly.
METROPOLITAN DIVISION
1) Carolina Hurricanes (M1)
The perfect storm of veterans, players in their prime, and young guys making a name for themselves. Seriously, across all 12 Forwards, 6 Defenders, and 2 Goalies, there is not one weak link. That’s why I picked them to win it all last year, and they did. The Canes force their brand of hockey on you. They spend 3x as much time in the attacking zone as they do in their own zone. That’s not just winning. That’s pure dominance. Additionally, their young core is locked up for years to come on VERY team-friendly deals. I don't expect much of a championship hangover from Rod "The Bod" Brind'Amour's squad. Back-to-back for the Red and Black?
2) Washington Capitals (M2)
If Carolina wasn’t so good, I’d have the Caps winning this division in a landslide. While they still could because we have yet to play a game, it’ll more likely be a tight race. It’s also likely to be Alex Ovechkin’s final season. I think everyone in Washington knows this, and they’re going all in to get him one last Cup. The front office fired off several good trades, went big game hunting in free agency, and nailed every single move this offseason. There are too many players to name, but Washington is an entrenched, physical team that can also score from anywhere on the ice. Supported by a high-caliber goalie tandem, the well-balanced Caps will be a very tough out.
3) Philadelphia Flyers (M3)
While the Eastern Conference is wildly unpredictable, I feel really good about my Top 6 teams. The Flyers are one of them. I love this roster. They're physical, methodical, and look like they're just having fun out there. The chemistry is unmatched. I like Philly to get to the playoffs, but I'm not sure how far they'll go. Their lack of a true first-line Center sticks out like a sore thumb to me. They have some good wingplay and one of the better defenses in the league, but you have to win at the faceoff circle. HC Rick Tocchet clings to a "dump and chase" playstyle that suits his players' strengths and alludes to those Broad Street Bully days. My bold take this year? The Flyers will have the best Power Play unit in the NHL.
4) Columbus Blue Jackets
I could be totally whiffing on this pick. I'm usually all about vibes, but I'm going against the grain with this one. The vibes could not be worse in Columbus. After choking away a playoff spot in a matter of weeks, another imploding trade request debacle, and weirdly firing then unfiring their coach, things were looking bleak. But, there's an interesting halo around this team. They've got some very quality players that all have positive attitudes. They're committed to the franchise (which never wins anything), and this same franchise can still recruit new free agents. Columbus has some other A-tier players that they just need to convince to stick around. If they do, they're in playoff contention. If they don't, then this #4 pick will look pretty foolish come April.
5) New Jersey Devils
This pick should come with a warning label that says "FRAGILE" for two reasons: 1) any belief in the Devils is always fragile, and 2) they can't stay healthy. Some teams are just cursed with the injury bug. New Jersey is one of them. Despite this, they made some really good moves this offseason to clear up cap space and add some more firepower to their offense. Everyone's talking about the RW Luke Evangelista trade and how this young star will finally break out this season. I don't disagree. While I think this new system is better for him and that he may be their missing piece, a lot still has to go right. Availability is the best ability, and the Devils' razor-thin defensive depth will kneecap them all year long.
6) Pittsburgh Penguins
I want to put Pittsburgh higher up on this list, but I don't think they can recreate last year's magic. A lot went right for them. For some reason, all their old veterans (who are like 36+ years old) had career years and played like they were in their 20s. Reality quickly set in when they were run out of the gym by a much younger Flyers team in the First Round. While the Pens do have some solid young players like C Ben Kindel, the majority of this roster just can't keep up. Veteran presence is most effective as an auxiliary piece. It shouldn't be your entire roster. Maybe I'm disrespecting the old guys a bit too much. They do have several future HOFers on their starting roster still, and that's nothing to scoff at.
7) New York Islanders
I have never seen such bipolar media reactions to a team like I have this year's Islanders. Some think they're in the race for the #1 pick while others think they'll be a Top 3 seed. What does this season actually look like for the Isles? Give me the good news first, Doc. Their defense is headlined by sophomore phenom Matthew Schaefer, and they have one of the best goalies in the league between the pipes. New HC Pete DeBoer is expected to finally revive this lifeless offense too. The bad news? I don't think he can do it. DeBoer is a good coach, but the talent just isn't there... yet. They have a lot of good prospects that will be pro-ready in a year or two. Give this team some time to mature.
8) New York Rangers
Ask any Rangers fan, and they'll tell you this team belongs in last place. Not just the division, but the entire league. I think that's a bit extreme, but I see their point. New York's Forward group is in shambles. No Artemi Panarin. No Vincent Trochek. And their C2 is... Matt Rempe??? They may lose 90% of their faceoffs this season. They did upgrade somewhat by adding sniper RW Pavel Dorofeyev on a massive $77M deal, but is it enough to replace what was lost? Their defense and goaltending are fine, I guess. I'm not very optimistic about this team with Tank Commander Mike Sullivan at HC and a front office that consistently sits on their hands.
